About the NWX

Part of CelAudio’s Reference Series, the NWX is designed for network-based music systems. It combines two internal switch modules with a shared precision clock architecture, providing connections for music servers, streamers and upstream networking equipment.

Four RJ45 ports and four SFP interfaces accommodate copper Ethernet, compatible optical modules and supported direct-attach connections. Four separate 10 MHz clock outputs allow the NWX to supply a reference to compatible external components.

Individually Powered Ethernet Interfaces

Each RJ45 port uses its own PHY—the physical-layer transceiver responsible for transmitting and receiving Ethernet signals.

Every PHY has an independent power supply and a dedicated clock input. This allows CelAudio to address power delivery and clock distribution at the individual interface level.

The two switch modules use industrial and carrier-grade components, selected to operate across a wide temperature range.

Dual-OCXO Clock Architecture

The NWX contains two oven-controlled crystal oscillators within a single shielded clock module.

A 10 MHz OCXO provides the reference, while a separate 50 MHz OCXO serves the CelCLK II PLL clock system. The PLL uses a narrow 1 Hz locking bandwidth.

CelAudio specifies the 10 MHz oscillator at −120 dBc/Hz phase noise at a 1 Hz offset, with an Allan deviation of 8 × 10⁻¹³ at a one-second averaging interval. The 50 MHz oscillator is specified at −85 dBc/Hz at a 1 Hz offset and 1 × 10⁻¹¹ at one second.

These figures describe oscillator performance, rather than a measurement of the complete playback system.

Reference Clock Distribution

Two BNC and two SMA outputs provide 10 MHz reference signals for compatible equipment. CelAudio recommends SMA connections when linking the NWX to compatible NS-series music servers.

An additional BNC input accepts an external 10 MHz reference. Rear-panel controls select the reference source and allow clock-status and Ethernet indicators to be switched off.
